About BHS Owners

Forging future Farriers

Bluegrass Horseshoeing School is owned and operated by Dan Helton, CJF and Kim Helton. Dan and Kim have wanted to bring BHS to life for over a decade. Dan and Kim are passionate about proper hoof care and offering the best education to potential Farriers. Dan received his Farrier education at Tucumcari vocational college under the instruction of Mr. Jim Keith. After graduation he apprenticed for Mr. Craig Trnka . He then moved to Austin Texas where he operated a successful business for 7 years. After 7 successful years in Texas Dan moved to Indiana to begin a new chapter in his Farrier career. There he ran his Farrier business for 24 years. Dan has been blessed throughout his career to have had the experience of shoeing many different breeds of horses and disciplines. Dan also developed his skills in working with and helping lame horses and became known as a lameness expert. During his time in Indiana Dan traveled and shod horses in multiple countries. He also successfully competed in shoeing competitions placing consistently in open competitions for many years. When Dan and Kim were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to open Bluegrass Horseshoeing School the decision was an easy one. BHS gives Dan the opportunity to take his 30 plus years in the Farrier industry and share his knowledge and experience with students. He is dedicated to training the very best Farriers in  the industry.

In his spare time he enjoys making Damascus knives, Farrier tools and spending time with his wife, Kim and his dogs and horses. He is a member of the American Bladesmith Society as an apprentice.

Kim Helton, has shown and trained Tennessee Walking Horses for the last twenty years and enjoys training new riders to safely ride and enjoy their horses. She has a strong background in customer service. She is your first point of contact with BHS and will help you through the enrollment process and be your support system during your time at BHS. Kim is here to help all students get on solid footing once they graduate from BHS. She will help you with establishing your Farrier business and try to connect you with other Farriers to apprentice with once you graduate. We believe at BHS That your education goes beyond your time at school and will do all we can to help you navigate the process of starting your own business.

Dan and Kim are passionate about animal welfare and support adoption and spaying and neutering your pets.
